August did not react well to being informed that metaphysically ripping out the corrupt influence on his magic would hurt. Orson whipped behind him and put him in an armlock, and Sally warned August from the door that the shotgun was, in fact, loaded and in capable hands. Luke, whose head was still spinning, could do little more than threaten loudly in colorful language. Cormick went for his cell phone in the kitchen, to call in what few reinforcements they had left.

31st Night—Cherokee Louise

Miranda smiled a little, knowing smile, slight and mysterious, as she looked out the window. Dhiar sat across from her at the small table, back in his chair and watching her face.

Really, her golden hair, her fair features and rose-red lips, even without makeup—it was a feminine ideal. The parts that interested him the most were the little laugh lines on her face, the weathering that gave her such character at the corners of her eyes and her mouth. These things made her appear less of a doll and more of a real woman, whatever else her heritage contributed.

Luke woke with the dawn, as he had for the past several hundred years. Sally lay beside him, significantly more rumpled than she had been the night before. She was, Luke had just discovered, an active sleeper.

She breathed deep, almost huffing, the lines of worry on her face slackened. Her dark hair lay in a careless tangle around her face; her spaghetti-strap pajamas were pulled askew by her midnight squirming. Luke bit his lip, looking her over, so touchable and pretty. He could see the outline of her breasts against the thin pajama fabric, and the cleft of her cleavage, the curve of her hip where her shirt had pulled up in the night. For a moment, Sally looked alarmed. “Do you… ah… want kids?” she asked Luke.

Luke looked down at Sally’s stomach. A series of images flashed though his mind in quick succession, like a film montage–Sally holding a baby, following an exploring toddler at the park, sitting with a young child doing homework, reading a dark-haired little girl to sleep. He tried to imagine Sally pregnant. Pregnant with his baby, her tummy round and smooth. He brought his hands around to the front of her waist and ran his thumbs over her currently mostly flat stomach.
