18th Night—The Other Side of Life

It wasn’t at all what Dhiar had expected, this place. It was almost like an experiment in décor and architecture, but fully appealing: everything seemed warm and inviting, no real walls, and only a few windows, easily hidden by drapes. Those drapes, as well as tapestries and cloth hangings, made the borders of the room. It looked a bit like what a harem might resemble, in some elaborate fantasy. When I came to, I was still bound, but this time my hands were in front of me and I was not blindfolded. I was lying on a blanket that smelled of horse and I appeared to be in a small tent.

My head felt like metalsmiths with hammers were shaping it from the inside and my mouth was as dry as if they had gagged me with cloth. I winced as someone pulled aside the flap of the tent and the brightness felt like needles in my eyes. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 30

Chapter 23

Sally was sitting on the porch next to Sootie when Luke got back to his house. He stopped just outside the fringe of mesquite forest and looked at her. She was in shorts, her knobbly knees drawn up to her chest. When he looked at her, he saw the faint impression of a Navajo weaver, a Canadian lover, an American Indian girl in Mexico, and he saw through the eyes of an American farrier, a British businessman, a Greek merchant. 17th Night—Under the Ivy

Dhiar swore he could see fireworks as his eyes opened again. He inhaled rose-scented air, the blooms all around him. The white roses were open, smiling out at the world, and his lips were on Siros’s, so soft and pink and delicate.

The angel looked so much like a marble statue, a magnificently enthralling combination of delicate and masculine. Dhiar could feel his body, so close, a mixture too: at the same time soft and accommodating, and sturdy and muscular. He couldn’t resist, couldn’t stop himself, and he found himself embracing Siros, arms curled tightly about his chest. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 17

We passed a check point of some kind around dawn, the guards bantering with Jort before letting us pass, and the wagon rolled on and on. I wondered why I didn’t feel hungry at all, but my stomach was in such knots from fear and worry I couldn’t have eaten anything now even if my hands had been free and a banquet were in front of me. Chapter 22

Luke slept fitfully that night, rose before dawn, and had a cup of coffee and a cigarette on the front porch before starting out in the fading dark. Sootie stayed on the porch, knowing somehow that Luke was on a solo mission. He hiked deep into his land, through the mesquite glades and the yucca patches, up and down the red-rock ravines. He knew when he’d reached the center of his land, a grassy spot that just felt right. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 22

In 1994, Circlet published Wired Hard: Stories for a Gay Universe, a ground-breaking anthology of M/M SF erotica. Over the decades that followed, we published four more hot and innovative collections in the series. And now, for the very first time, all five volumes are available in one massive omnibus ebook! Forty-three short stories by writers such as David Laurents,  M. Christian, Shanna Germain, Zachary Jernigan, Gary Bowen, and Eric Del Carlo, as well as a preface and bonus story by editor Cecilia Tan.

Rather than the usual excerpt, we thought we’d share with you Cecilia’s preface about the role of queer erotica then and now. (and you can still find a fiction excerpt here)

I took my first queer political action in the 1980s, marching in a parade/protest march on the Brown University campus in 1986. At the time the country was gripped by AIDS panic, if your commanding officer searched your duffel and found a copy of Drummer you were kicked out of the military, and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe was receiving funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Rest in peace, Robert. Rest in peace, NEA.

16th Night—Never Be Mine

Dhiar enjoyed parties, but all things considered, he was more of a homebody. Some Incubi and Succubi were social butterflies, always loving the party of the moment; Chana was like that. His sister thrived on parties, on mingling, and could make a rather fine existence off canapés and whatever champagne the host fancied. He could see her, in his mind, with best friend and lover Lilly, smoking cigarettes in those long holders with the flower design at the end.

How they loved that! Dhiar wondered if that was the kind of life he would end up getting used to, in time. He would have to ring her up sometime soon. Maybe that was a better idea than watching Noctemburg slowly roll to a halt. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 16

In the morning a commander came, and he and two other officers supervised our march from the camp. They hadn’t given us weapons yet, or orders, and I wondered how far we would be going. Not far on foot, it turned out, as they marched us down to the river and loaded us onto a barge. We were twenty four men in total, including the commander and his second, and two bowmen who took turns on top. From the way the other men eyed them I knew they were less there to protect us from the enemy than to shoot any of us that tried to flee. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 28
