I could not move, I was so spent. But someone was lifting me off of Willim, and someone else was washing my chest with a wet cloth… and it felt like they all still wanted to touch me. We were still in the dell where fight practice had happened, and where we had just spilled our milk simultaneously. “I’m sorry,” I said, when I finally could speak, though I kept my eyes closed. “I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

“Shush, you,” Kan said. “I didn’t think. It was stupid of us to have aroused you so.”

Willim was still wrapped partway around me, or so it felt like. “Will someone please explain to me what just happened? Not that it wasn’t quite enjoyable.” Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 38

Chapter 31

Sally shifted in Allison’s arms; Allison only held her tighter from behind, as if willing her to listen, to heed her. “Charging a satyr isn’t complicated, but simple doesn’t necessarily mean easy. It’s like birthing a baby–you have to know what muscles you’re supposed to use, and you probably don’t even know you have these magical muscles until you start using them. Direct your magic toward Luke. Funnel it toward him. Right now you radiate all over, like one of those static electricity ball thingies. You gotta be more like lightning, sending it all right to him.” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 31

25th Night—Tsumetai Tsuki

The night pressed on. By now, Siros wanted rest, and so he slept in the room they shared. But as often happened in the night, Dhiar found himself restless, and so he picked himself up and took himself for a walk.

He couldn’t remember how long he had walked, or the turns he had taken; it didn’t matter, in Dis. He would find his way back easily enough when he wanted to return. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 25

The next morning the general met with a bevy of his top commanders. I was bade to wait in the field marshal’s tent with two other pages while they conferred. The pages served the two largest battalion commanders, and knew one another, it seemed. They were probably the same age as me, yet they were so much more knowledgeable than I was. I listened to them go on about all things military for some time without saying a word, but eventually their attention turned to me. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 37

Chapter 30

When Luke came through the portal back into his world, his first thought was that it all looked so gray. He felt himself tilting off the side of the horse–or rather, the world slid sideways, and down he went with it. He tried to cling to the horse’s neck, but his arms fell away, as if the simple act of holding on were an impossible feat of strength. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 30

24th Night—Hounds of Love

The days were so luxuriously long, the nights seemed endless, and all in all Dhiar was having a great time. It felt so good to go home, even once in a while. The time that passed between the occasions made it seem all the more special.

And now, arm-in-arm with Siros, he walked down the streets of stone towards the sound of music and the glow of lights.

This music pulsed and writhed through the body, it pulled one’s very being into rhythm. Even if a person had never danced, it made them want to move. They might not know a pirouette from a fox-trot, but this was the kind of sound where it all became so magnificently irrelevant. This was not the time for well-learned, practised motion. We drew ever nearer the castle, and one day we climbed a ridge and could just make it out, partway up a mountain on the horizon, like one small white tooth in a great jaw of grey teeth. With it seemingly so near, all I wanted to do was ride all night until we reached the walls, but Kan called for us to set up camp.

“We’ll wait here until a sentry can go and return with news,” he said as he dismounted.

“And how long will that be?” I was still on my horse. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 36

Chapter 29

She sat sidesaddle on a skeletal horse, and gauzy wraps draped her bones in what would have been a scandalous and enticing fashion had she been whole. Scraps and ropes of long, blonde hair clung to her scalp, held in place mostly by the deteriorating silken scarf around her brow. She crooked her finger, and the great spear Luke carried became impossibly heavy, unbearably heavy–he went down to his knees, the spear across both shoulders, both hands held in place by invisible bonds. He could not put it down. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 29

23rd Night—Time of the Season

The sun shining down on them was as different as could be from Noctemburg’s perpetual night. At first it hurt Dhiar’s eyes a little bit, to be so bright. But even it was not as oppressively bright as it could have been.

There, in the subterranean grandeur of Dis, the Great City of the Abyss… there, the place which Dhiar had known for so much of his youth, which all of his kind know and had known… the trees grew taller than buildings, the streets cobbled and the buildings a mixture of the most beautiful of designs.

In this place, Siros felt completely awed. It was a bit like Dhiar felt around Siros, like this other person, this splendid other person in his life, had such power and knowledge, such a natural awareness of things that he himself could not. In this place, he could stretch his wings. He could fly, and fly into a sky; despite being underground, the Abyss actually had a sky, celestial bodies, and other things that seemed like luxuries by comparison to Noctemburg. The next day, the general was still not recovered enough to ride. The leg, which had been stiff to the point of agony, was now too weak to support his weight. He instead moved to sitting on the fallen tree and various commanders came to report to him. Now that my charade of ignorance was over, I took on the duties of an actual page, and recorded names and made notes as I was bade to. The only thing he did not let me see was an envoy’s package with the royal seal on it. I noted he did not let Marksin see it either. In the afternoon, when I was not looking, he limped into the tent and read it, and then, I assume either hid it or burned it as I did not see it anywhere.

That evening, the cook’s men filled a large half-barrel with steaming water from kettle after kettle. After they left, Roichal eased his leg into the water. He looked supremely uncomfortable to be just sitting still, though. Restless. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 35
