49th Night—Carnival

Two bodies writhed, wet and supple, on the deck.

At first it had started with getting clean. That lasted an impressive handful of seconds before the sheer lust of seeing the naked body of lovers overtook them; it was remarkable, actually, that they had lasted this long without entering one or the other. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 49

What was that unfamiliar rushing sound? I could not name it, but it came and went, even as the familiar sensation of Roichal’s hand stroking me told me all was well.

Or was it? I opened my eyes to find him leaning over me, swearing and then pulling me close, crushing me to him. Then he let me go, and I collapsed back onto the blanket. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 61

The next morning, Luke was up with the dawn, and the rest of his entourage followed suit not too long after. He handed them each a cup of coffee as they staggered from the bedroom, each declaring him far too cheerful and energetic. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 54

48th Night—Dry Grass and Shadows

Here they were, more than halfway to Scotland, and the two of them bounced impatiently in the cabin of the ship. The sun drew closer to the horizon, and soon the sky would be illuminated only by the pinpricks of stars and the distant glow of the occasional port town.

Dhiar could have just altered his body, but that wouldn’t have been sporting. Besides which, he had reached and surpassed the point where any significant alterations of the body were only reluctantly undertaken; Chana seemed to have more proclivities to shapeshifting than he did. He felt it was just an unnecessary bother, aside from the occasional detail, here or there. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 48

There is a span of time I do not remember. No, I am not speaking of the misty time after I was born and before I could speak. I speak of the hour after the king finished with me. Indeed, I have no memory of his actual finishing, for my mind had fled to some safe corner of my dreams before then.

When at last I surfaced, it was because there was a soft murmuring from somewhere, coaxing me back with a promise of gentle warmth. I gradually became aware that I was lying on my side in a bed somewhere, and that a warm body was wrapped around mine from behind. At the recognition of Sergetten’s scent on the sheets I had the sudden hope that he had transported us back to the keep, far from Maldevar. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 60

Chapter 53

Charlie was sitting up in Sally’s bed when they came in, a battered paperback copy of The Hobbit propped on his knees. He looked over the top of his glasses at them, a childlike librarian. “Am I getting kicked out?”

Sally smiled as she sat down on the bed next to him and laid her cheek against his shoulder. “No honey, of course not. Luke and I thought we might could help you. You know, get centered, get past the worst of the trauma. Satyrs work with earth magic, they’re good at that kind of thing.” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 53

47th Night—Trouble Me

Dhiar slid his hands up Adoric’s tunic, feeling the hair on his chest and over his stomach. He sighed and kissed at the back of the man’s neck. Chana was well on her way to take the train. She’d be in Berlin days or weeks before he would be, but he resolved he could not leave Adoric so quickly.

The first mate, meanwhile, had requested some leave and of course got it; he was actually more senior than the current captain of the vessel.

“So, shall we get off to the north? Perhaps the Isle of Man?” Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 47

At dawn Roichal and I continued traveling south. We had passed out of the blighted farming area and into the rocky hills that were not good for farms nor orchards, and toward the end of the day after we had paused at a stream to drink our fill, Roichal took us higher into the hills, both of us walking and his horse, Kinsall, coming up behind us.

“Ah, here we are,” Roichal said, as we rounded one bit of outcropping to a flat area wide enough for Kinsall to turn around. All I could see up the steep hillside on our left was bushes, while to the right the slope tapered sharply downward. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 59

Chapter 52

Luke rapped his knuckles on the door of the spare bedroom and entered when he heard Orson’s voice give a muffled “Come in.” He’d never been in this room of Sally’s house. Orson and Mae sat on a white metal daybed with enough decorative pillows to double as a couch. An old Singer sewing machine and a bookcase with an impressive array of cotton print fabrics and half-finished projects was on one side of the room; a pegboard with enough unfathomable tools to fill a dungeon hung on the adjoining wall. The closet door had a sign written in calligraphy: “Craft Closet: Open at Your Own Risk.” The room was awash in blush pink, lavender, and sunshine yellow. This was, clearly, Sally’s mother’s domain. Incubus Tales: Chapter 46

46th Night—Universe Tipping

“I come from a city on the water,” Dhiar explained, his voice sweet and lingering on the air, vibrating lightly in the ears. “Tall and short buildings, stone paths all around, winding between the buildings and neighborhoods. So many trees. The grandest trees dwarf all the buildings, making huge canopies. Their arms stretch out, as if they were our guardians. They may well be.”

Adoric’s eyes were wide. He lifted his arms as the Incubus slipped his shirt off after his turtleneck. The man’s body felt warm and soft, with the light hairs all over the chest and down to the navel. He eased back to the bed, atop the mattress, and Dhiar all but draped over him like a personal blanket. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 46
