Chapter 48

All things considered, the puncture wound in Luke’s arm was the least of their problems, but Sally and Agatha insisted on dressing it. When they came out of the house, Alan was gone, collected by the reinforcements Cormick had called for before Luke and the others left for the storage facility. The dead troll in the middle of the yard was gone, as was Sally’s mother’s sedan–riddled with bullets, windows shot out, the front half crushed from its encounter with the gate, bloodstained from several different people, and containing the body of Glen the goblin. Luke wondered which of the myth-folk locals had used what sort of magic to rid the place of the car so quickly and quietly. The three council members from the troll prison had left for San Antonio for long-term treatment with a myth-folk doctor. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 48

42nd Night—Gimme Gimme Gimme

Naked bodies glistened with water and the sparkle of lamps. They hadn’t wanted to switch on the electric lights, but they had to provide some illumination in the middle of the night. A Succubus and an Incubus in attendance made it less of a priority for the light to be particularly brilliant; the sense of touch proved much more telling about the geography of the bodies of others.

In short, Dhiar and Chana had completely unintentionally turned the fraternity’s natatorium apple-bobbing goof into an impromptu orgy. Everyone seemed to be having quite a good time though, so neither regretted it. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 42

I have likely been remiss in relating what being beaten is like. There is quite a difference between being struck with a fist, as in a fight, and being strapped or whipped, as in the punishments I accepted, first as Kenet’s ladra’an, then as Sergetten’s bound slave.

There is no less violence in the whip, and indeed, far greater intensity of pain in the burn of leather across skin than in the mere crunch of knuckle or bone against flesh. A man is much more likely to scream upon a single touch of the strap than he would upon being kicked or punched.

I am not singular in this regard. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 54

Chapter 47

Luke played the ancient song, the first time he’d played it since that day so long ago. It hung in the chill air like the baying of a hound. It was not the happy song he once thought. It was enthusiastic, exciting, but for no wholesome reason. It was a call to arms, an invitation to rabid violence. It was the kind of song felt bone deep, an inevitable, terrible melody recognized by all who heard it because it hibernated in the deep reservoirs of human ancestral memory, burned into the minds and souls of those who had it ringing in their ears as they died. It was an old song about old blood. Luke understood now how right his mother and the teacher had been to be frightened when a six-year-old in Texas drew that song out of thin air and a cheap child’s violin. 41st Night—Return to Me

Merry and Tomas sat conversing pleasantly, with Chana elbowing Dhiar delicately nearby.

“I don’t know how you do it,” she mumbled to him, in a tone that only he was likely to hear at all. “You do good, avoiding those jealous spats.”

Dhiar just shrugged his shoulders, a wide smile across his face. “I just don’t like people getting all hostile over the silliest things. Besides…” he looked down a bit, “I’m still not sure if this place is right for me to settle for any length of time. So if I should have to go again, I’ve introduced two very special and very interesting people to each other, and maybe… they won’t need me, if that happens.” Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 41

I gathered from the bits and pieces I heard that there was quite a bit of disagreement about how the military campaign was to be waged, and that this was the main reason we had not yet moved to attack. There were some towns refusing to send their men for fear of the Night Riders and the military leaders debated what to do about that. Then word came that a delegation from Pellon was at the castle and all planning ground to a halt. None of us could guess whether their ambassadors were there to sue for peace on Frangit’s behalf, declare their alliance with us, or merely allow our army to pass through their lowlands to attack Frangit where the border was not mountainous.

Roichal and Marksin spent an hour after nightfall, after the news had come, drinking some of the whisky that had come from the castle on the same wagon as me. They were both a bit redfaced as they got ready for bed. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 53

Chapter 46

Luke, Orson, and Sally surrounded the sobbing former troll in silence, stunned by the unprecedented death of a myth-folk’s immortal soul. Luke was the first to move, to press on with what had to be done, though he did so with the feeling he had just acquired several new nightmares. There were still the chupacabras to deal with. They were currently hiding in the shrubs, waiting to see how things developed before committing themselves, but they would not hold back for the sake of reverence for the fallen. 40th Night—Scenery

Another night passed in a smoky club. All of Chana’s favourite clubs were underground, figuratively if not literally; every last one of them required some sort of secret to access, which heightened the appeal for the Succubus. To her, predictability and ease chipped off great chunks of anything’s allure.

In Dhiar existed a similar sort of sentiment, although it became somewhat daunting that literally every place they went required some considerable procedure only to walk through the door. It exhausted one before even procuring a table. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 40

If there was a lesson to be learned over the next few days of training under Sergetten, it was that my cock had a mind all its own. I could no more make it rise on command before him than I had been able to make it lie quiet the night the king had banished me. Sergetten snarled and snapped at me, as if he were more frustrated by my inability than I was myself.

He had me on all fours and was merely strapping me with full force across the buttocks when I thought to ask whether he truly expected me to be able to accomplish it, or whether it was merely a test—an excuse to lay into me. When his arm grew tired and I caught my breath, that is what I asked. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 52

Chapter 45

Alan didn’t look like a cop anymore. He’d left his police cruiser in the grass; his uniform was shredded into a tattered rag that clung to his body, stony as the others, dark and sharp like dull obsidian. He showed a jagged mouth full of teeth to Luke as the satyr stepped out of Sally’s house and crossed the front porch, rifle at ease but ready. The body of the troll who had been shot still lay in the yard. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 45
