39th Night—Down to You

Despite wishes to the contrary, Dhiar and Merry could not neglect everything else to spend all their time together; Dhiar had Chana to placate, and Merry his own work to do and things that demanded his time. So the day found the Incubus in town with his sister, strolling down a street filled with life.

Racks of clothes sat outside some of the shops, coaxing passers-by, while just a short distance away, people sat on the terrace to sip their teas and coffees in the clear weather. A familiar breeze rustled Dhiar’s curls.

“We’ll have rain.” Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 39

Something was going to happen. Something soon, it seemed, given the number of strategy sessions Roichal held among his top commanders, and the duration of them. One night they continued far past sundown, and I fell asleep sitting on the floor of the tent, leaning against a chest.

When I woke, Marksin was pulling my boots off. We were in his tent. From here, closer to the main camp, I could hear men singing along while one played a drum and another bowed a string. I tried to sit up, but he just twisted the other boot off and tossed it aside, his firm hands on my ankle. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 51

Chapter 44

Luke followed Sally up the front steps and into the house. His body shook from the adrenaline of the battle with the troll, with Mae, with himself. His head was back to hurting; had it been only that morning that August had given him a mild concussion? It seemed like days ago. The grounding magic from earlier wasn’t going to hold off the pain and fatigue forever. He was hungry–no, he decided, he was ravenous. He hadn’t eaten since before he’d gone through the portal on August’s horse. August couldn’t be a whole lot better off. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 44

38th Night—Many Moons

They hadn’t done anything particularly naughty. But it was shortly after the cordial had been finished, and both Dhiar and Merry were naked and laughing. They lounged in the tub, filled with warm water. It started out hot, but it had cooled. With the both of them in it and the room so warm, it stayed at a comfortable temperature.

Dhiar splashed a bit at Merry, who shielded his face and then splashed back.

“I’ve never really done this sort of thing!” Merry offered again, as if to justify it all. “My baths have always been strictly solitary affairs.” Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 38

I awoke sore and stiff, my eyes still closed but my awareness of my skin, of my bruises, spreading through my body. Curiously enough, all Sergetten had done last night was beat me with a leather strap until I literally could not take another blow, and was on the verge of begging him for mercy even though I knew I would receive none. Just as I was ready to let the words spill forth, he stopped. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 50

Chapter 43

Somewhere beyond the nymph-induced bliss that rode roughshod over Luke’s mind, there was a tiny, screaming remnant of his psyche that understood what was happening. That distant bit of consciousness looked out of his eyes but could not speak, or move, or stop. The rest of him, like August and Orson, was wholly engulfed by Mae’s magic. He had never seen her cut loose to this extent; on an intellectual level it was an impressive show of power, but one he wouldn’t appreciate until later. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 43

37th Night—Night Scented Stock

Dhiar felt Merry. More specifically, he felt the man’s body against his own, and it made him happy. He had said farewell to Chana at the party, expressed that he would see her the next day sometime, and then they returned to Merry’s flat.

It was hardly a glorious or luxurious residence, but it was nice and warm and intimate, and as it was on the edge of the city, it was more generous than inner-city life would have given. Presumably, it was also less expensive. Dhiar always reflected on the strange dynamic of human value, especially in cities. On one hand, some of the places were very close to trendy spots, and on the other, they were often tiny, squalid little affairs. Other places weren’t so convenient to trends, but they were much more pleasant to live in; yet somehow they often seemed the cheaper of the two options. Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 37

The following day, Roichal was thrown as we were skirting the edges of the camp, along the eastern woodlands. I was riding beside him, the field marshal just ahead, and two regional commanders just behind, when something spooked the mare he was riding that day. She reared and then rolled. My own horse shied and bolted aside and I wondered if there had been a viper in the road, but by the time I turned the mare back toward him, the others were off their horses and helping him up. There was no sign of any snake that I could see. The mare was standing still and shivering, as if in fear, but also nuzzling at him as if in apology. The general spoke soothing words and remounted without much difficulty. Continue reading The Prince’s Boy: Chapter 49

Chapter 42

The drive to Sally’s parents’ home was tense and quiet. The released prisoners were dehydrated and weak, more fit for a hospital than a showdown with a group of deranged trolls. Brent suggested that a detour to the hospital might be the right course, but Luke pointed out that questions would inevitably rise about how they got in such a state, and when left unanswered, would certainly delay their return to Sally and company and might even result in a search of the car. Including the trunk, which contained a dead goblin in a cracked blue tarp. All discussion was tabled. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 42

36th Night—Gimme Sympathy

The party disappointed Dhiar. Chana lost herself in the crowd, leaving the Incubus floating free and quite overwhelmed by the miasma of conflicting feelings in this group. Anxiety seemed the most prominent feeling in the place, fear, confusion, loss, nervous desire… there was very little of the pleasure that made up the stuff of his existence. It frustrated him.

As he turned to the doors that led out to the garden, he nearly collided with a man, somewhere in his early twenties surely; he had the glow of youth with only a slight tempering of maturity. Mainly it was in his eyes, with a depth that even the oldest in this salon did not share.

“Terribly sorry!” Dhiar held up his hands cheerfully. “Just needed a breath of air.” Continue reading Incubus Tales: Chapter 36
