Chapter 26

Luke and Sally met August farther down the road, where they shared a shortened version of the confrontation at the bridge. August looked back toward the bridge with a curious expression almost like regret. Luke wondered if perhaps he wished he had been in on the action–or if he wished it had gone the other way. The sharp pang of doubt gnawed at him, though he had no solid reason to question August now. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 26

Chapter 25

Luke called August from the cab of the pickup, shirtless and barefoot. “This better be good, because I was really goddamn busy,” he growled. Beside him, Sally crossed her arms tight over her chest, staring resolutely out the window like a frustrated teenager. Sootie kept a low profile on the floorboard between them. Chapter 24

Tripping over each other in their hurry, Luke and Sally made their way to the couch, the first available horizontal surface that wasn’t made of wood. Sally’s excitement put off great waves of magical energy that ran through Luke like shockwaves, little jolts of electrocution that left his brain happily disjointed in the rush. She lifted his shirt off of him in one smooth motion and pushed him backward onto the threadbare couch. It squeaked as he landed on it; neither of them took much notice. Chapter 23

Sally was sitting on the porch next to Sootie when Luke got back to his house. He stopped just outside the fringe of mesquite forest and looked at her. She was in shorts, her knobbly knees drawn up to her chest. When he looked at her, he saw the faint impression of a Navajo weaver, a Canadian lover, an American Indian girl in Mexico, and he saw through the eyes of an American farrier, a British businessman, a Greek merchant. Chapter 22

Luke slept fitfully that night, rose before dawn, and had a cup of coffee and a cigarette on the front porch before starting out in the fading dark. Sootie stayed on the porch, knowing somehow that Luke was on a solo mission. He hiked deep into his land, through the mesquite glades and the yucca patches, up and down the red-rock ravines. He knew when he’d reached the center of his land, a grassy spot that just felt right. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 22

Chapter 21

Luke knew better than to press Sally that day or the next, when Cormick called a city meeting and informed the rest of the myth-folk community of the disappearances of Glen and Brent. He called ahead to make sure she would have time to talk with him before he showed up the next day after work.

He found her in the barn, reorganizing the feed room. He leaned against the doorframe and watched her for a minute, partly admiring her butt and partly working up the nerve to say something. Finally she turned around, a piece of hay in her hair and her hands on her hips. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 21

Chapter 20

The next day, Luke drove up to Brent’s house after work, an old trailer in the same area as Orson’s–not so much a park as a side street that had slowly filled up with trailers. He stared at the 1980s-model single-wide over the top of his steering wheel, brow furrowed. If not for Glen’s disappearance, Brent’s absence from work that day would not have raised his hackles. The tinker fae was prone to bouts of both intense productivity, in which all other obligations would be forgotten in his fervor to finish some new project, and drunken stupor, a tear that could last a week if not checked. He never would have kept his job if the foreman wasn’t his cousin. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 20

Chapter 19

There was no telling how many traffic laws Luke broke driving to Allison’s restaurant after work. By the time he got there, the sun was setting, and only Sally’s car was out front. He walked in to find Allison and Sally sitting in the far booth together, as smug and merciless as a cat with a whole nest full of canaries. Luke approached with caution.

“Hey girls,” he said. “Sooooo. How did things go with Mae this afternoon?” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 19

Chapter 18

It was a few blessed days of peace before Luke saw Mae again. Orson reassured Luke he would get her out of town as fast as possible. He didn’t have a leash on her, though, so Luke was not surprised when Mae turned up at his work. Luke was bent over a board, planing it with a large electric sander, when he felt a surge of excitement and greasy, sickening, lustful energy pass through him. It was entirely unlike the playful, heartfelt yearning he picked up from Sally or the passionate abandon in Allison. No one else he had ever met could make lust feel as unwholesome and selfish as Mae. Across from him, Brent stood up and took off his safety goggles. Luke turned off the sander and stood also, knowing who would be behind him. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 18

Chapter 17

Orson came through Luke’s front door without knocking. Luke was on the phone, and he waved as Orson gingerly set a heavy bag on the table.

“But I was thinking, what if it was just guys? No girls? Hello?”

Orson groaned as Luke stuck his cell phone in his pocket. “Tell me that wasn’t Sally.”

“I just wanted to see what she thought.” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 17
