Chapter 16

“So then she sprayed me with the sink hose and left, all in a huff.”

Orson laughed, and Luke scowled. “You really don’t know anything about women, do you?” Orson said.

“I know plenty,” Luke said, slouching back into his couch with a petulant expression on his face and a beer set on his stomach.

“Psh, whatever. You’ve been soaking in your satyr magic too long to remember what it’s like to be a normal man. Sally don’t want to be seduced, Luke. She wants to be romanced. There’s a difference. And because it’s Sally, what she finds romantic is gonna be different than most girls.” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 16

Chapter 15

Sally’s hands moved over Luke’s bare back as she clucked over the new scratches there. Her hands felt warm and soft, and Luke’s eyelids drooped. He was glad she was looking at his back and not at his lap. Then again, from the way a steady trickle of magical energy was making its way into him, maybe she would not have disapproved. The conversation kept him from inquiring too closely. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 15

Chapter 14

After the chupacabras were dead, the dust settled slowly and reluctantly, as if it relished the sudden burst of activity and yearned for more. Only stray pebbles dribbled down the cliff, which was now unrecognizable. Luke stood and shook himself, sending a new cloud of dust into the air. His magic spent, he was a weary, sag-eyed version of himself. Orson caught him before he fell and looped his arm around Luke’s waist, draping Luke’s arm over his broad shoulders. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 14

Chapter 13

Dawn and dusk were special times to the myth-folk, both in Fox Pass, Texas, and elsewhere. They were the in-between times–not quite day, not quite night. The myth-folk were almost mortal and almost eternal, not entirely human and not entirely magical, so their magic flickered a little brighter at sunrise and sunset, as if sensing a kinship with the changing light. Chapter 12

Allison knelt on his unmade bed and pulled off her shirt. Her white, lacy bra showed off her lightly tanned skin. Luke whistled. “You don’t waste any time, do you, girl? You ain’t got customers to get back to today, you know.”

“I know,” she said. “But you have to hunt. And I don’t want to lose my nerve. C’mon, satyr-boy–” Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 12

Chapter 11

Luke was relieved to be back at work. Though his back still itched and ached, his wounds were healing well, and he could do light labor without straining the stitches. What the doctor meant by “light labor” was probably not what Luke or his boss interpreted it to mean. Brent, a tinker creature from a long-lost underground land and a framer for the same construction company, was particularly concerned about Luke’s wounds, being more aware of what had happened than their very human coworkers. He came to help whenever he saw Luke doing something too strenuous, which was often. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 11

Chapter 10

Luke had vaguely hoped that in short order, August would be happily packed up and shunted off as far northeast as he could go without running into the ocean. But his hopes were dashed. The headless horseman was still hanging around three weeks later, followed everywhere he went by impressed female gazes (and the occasional appreciative male gaze) and an ominous black horse. Chapter 9

Luke was released from the hospital after thirty-nine stitches, a dizzying amount of medication, and a blood transfusion. He took one look at his truck, with the back window shattered and the seats soaked with blood, and called for a tow. Sally drove him to his house in her car. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 9

Chapter 8

Luke grabbed the shotgun that was always right inside the door and was off the porch before he realized it was full dark, with only the waning gibbous moon lighting the scene before him. The screams in the yard were garbled, inhuman, but easy enough to pinpoint. Saul wrestled with a creature in the moonlight, his bright white fur streaked with something darker. Luke raised the gun. Chapter 7

Luke picked Sootie up from Sally’s, which amounted to the front door of the house opening, Sootie running out, and the door slamming shut. He frowned at that, and his assurance that Sally really did want him, and not August, wilted. He turned from the asphalt highway to the concrete road running up the mountain, to the gravel street he lived on, to the deeply rutted dirt drive of his house, to his usual parking spot under the soapberry. Bone-weary, he climbed the steps to the porch. Continue reading Capricious: Chapter 7
